Festubert where William Henry Kenrick Owen was mortally wounded in WWI

Festubert & cemetery

(Left) The totally flat ground over which the attack was attempted at Festubert, just north of the La Bassée canal. The troops in the first waves of the abortive British attack were simply mown down by German machine-gunners.

(Right) A small Rememberance Day ceremony at Browns Road Cemetery, Festubert. in 2003. The graves in the foreground are those of members of the Welsh regiments, including Col. Henry John Maddocks. The names of Capt. Lewis Stephen Hogg & Maj. Charles Annesley Acton appear on the Loos Memorial; they have no known graves.
