The following incidental information was obtained while researching the life of Robert L Jones , one of six siblings who were born and raised in Penmachno, Caernarvonshire, by William and Ellen Jones. This page is about the family of the eldest daughter, Elinor (aka Ellen) Jones (b Nov 1838), one of the five siblings who chose to settle in Pennsylvania. (See this section for more information about the Jones family history; it also has links to pages about Ellen's siblings). This research is far from complete and there will be much more information available in the archives but I do not have the time at present to pursue what is for me a peripheral area of research. However, I do want to make available to other researchers what I have learned about this family; I shall make an announcement in the "News" section if I add anything more to this page.
Information from the 1841 and 1851 censuses appear on that family history page. In both instances the subject of this page is entered as Elinor Jones. In adulthood she would adopt the name by which her mother was known, Ellen.
The 1871 UK census shows Ellen (32) married to Richard Jones (30), a 'quarryman', born in Llanrwst, Denbighshire, as was their daughter, Catherine (6), whereas Ellen and their son William (3) were born in Penmachno, Caernarvonshire, which is where the family was living, in a property called 'Glan Aber'.
The 1881 UK census shows the family living in Tanrallt New Hut,Trawsfynydd, Merionethshire. Richard's occupation was 'Stone cutter'; he was then 38 and born in Capel Garmon, Caernarvonshire. He and Ellen (42), have children William (12), Elizabeth W (19), John R (6) and Margaret E (3), and there was a lodger, John Richards (26). In the 1900 US census, Ellen stated she gave birth to 5 children and 3 were living; it seems likely that their daughter Catherine died between 1871 and 1881.
Ellen and family arrived in America in 1890 to join four of her siblings scattered either side of the Mason-Dixie Line in the area around Delta, Pa.. The obituaries for their mother, Ellen, who died in 1896, when listing her children, speak of "Mrs. Ellen Jones, wife of Mr. Richard Jones, stone cutter" but there is no indication as to whether he is alive at that time. Someone called 'Richard Jones', together with other members of this Jones family, is listed as performing in a concert at Delta on June 1891 [Y Drych, 16th July 1891]. What is certain is that by the time of the 1900 US census Ellen was a widow. The census reveals that she was born in November 1838. With her were her son John R (aged 24 and b July 1875) and daughter Margaret E (aged 22 and b September1877). They are living in Stearn's Precinct, Harford, Maryland a few doors away from Ellen's sister Ann Roberts and family. Stearn's Precinct was an area of Maryland around and including Cardiff and Whiteford, adjacent to the border with Pennsylvania and very near to where their brother Robert lived. I have found no record of when exactly Richard died and I have looked no further, as yet, for what became of the rest of the family.
