Some War Poetry on YouTube (Poems referred to in the text - see the 'Features' section - plus a 'Bonus track')
Jim Clark was a pupil at William Collins School, Camden, when Eric Wynn-Owen taught there. He now produces animated clips of poets 'reading' their own works and these include some of the poems on this site. Some animations work better than others but the readings Jim chooses are generally excellent. If you are not happy looking at them - some find them spooky - then I recommend you listen to them.
'Futility' by Wilfred Owen (1893 - 1918)
Move him into the sun -
Gently its touch awoke him once,
At home, whispering of fields unsown.
Always it woke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.
Think how it wakes the seeds, -
Woke, once, the clays of a cold star.
Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides,
Full-nerved, - still warm, - too hard to stir?
Was it for this the clay grew tall?
- O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth's sleep at all?
O, move him into the sun, move him into the sun.
Gently its touch awoke him once,
Always it woke him, even in France.
Move him into the sun, move him into the sun,
Gently its touch awoke him once,
Whispering of fields unsown.
(Mid-section)
O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth's sleep at all?
Are limbs, so dear-achieved,
Are sides, - still warm, - too hard to stir?
O, move him into the sun,
Move him into the sun, move him into the sun.
Gently its touch awoke him once,
Whispering of fields unsown.
