Herbert Ultimus Owen (1877 - 1933)

James and Mary Owen's son, Herbert Ultimus Owen was born in 1877 [Newtown 1877, 4th qt]. He was living with his mother at 30 High Street Llanidloes, in 1891 and in 1901 he was an insurance agent, boarding with the Winstone family at 42 Fount Street, Ystradyfodwg, Rhondda.

In 1911 he was a coal hewer, living at Glen View Villas, Station Road, Nantybwch, Tredegar (map), not far from his brother, Llewellyn. With Herbert were his wife of eight years (there is no record of their marriage), Sarah Ellaline Owen, aged twenty-six and born in Edge Hill [Liverpool, 1886, 4th qt], and their two sons, the eldest, aged seven, also called Herbert Ultimus Owen (I believe father and son were both known as 'Albert') and the youngest, 'James Handel Owen', aged one. Both boys had been born in Merthyr Vale, Glamorgan. Sarah was the youngest surviving child of Sarah and Naphthali Jack, an Irish licenced vitualler, formerly in Dublin but then of various public houses in Liverpool. His licence was transferred to his wife, after his death, aged thirty-four, on 26 July 1888, about a year before the death of his son, Naphthali David Jack, who was born and died in 1889.

Herbert (senior) was still living at 2 Glen View, Station Road, Nantybwch, Dukestown, Tredegar, Monmouthshire, when he died, aged fifty-six, on Wednesday, 15 November 1933 [reg Crickhowell 1933, 4th quart].

Herbert Ultimus Owen (jun) was born on 8 June 1907 [Merthyr T. 1907, 3rd qt]. He married Ada A. Watkins [Bedwelty 1930, 1st qt]. Herbert died in 1982 [Blaeneau Gwent 1982, 2nd qt]. Ada was almost certainly Ada Adeline Watkins, who was born on 20 November 1908 [Bedwelty 1909, 1st qt] and who died in 1991, aged eighty-two [Blaeneau Gwent, Feb 1991]. I believe they had several children.

James Handel Owen was registered at birth as 'Handel Owen' [Merthyr T. 1910, 2nd qt], but listed as 'James Handel Owen' in the 1911 census. He married Sybil Maud Gould [Bedwellty 1935, 4th qt] (born 27 June 1915 [Bedwellty 1915, 3rd qt]), and they had three sons, one of whom, Gerald Owen, born on 18 December 1942 [Bedwellty 1943, 1st qt], died, childless, aged only forty-six [Blaeneau Gwent, Nov 1989]. James, himself, was a year younger when he died [Hay 1955, 4th qt] but Sybil lived to be sixty [d Pontypool 1975, 4th qt]. One son is still living & has living descendants. The 2nd son, Alwyn Owen, born in 1944 [Bedwellty 1944, 2nd qt], died in 2015. He left a widow and descendants
