Derwent Holford Owen (1902 - 1970)

Maurice and Margaret owen's only child, Derwent Holford Owen, was known as Taffy. He was born in Wynberg, Observatory, about ten kilometres from the city center of Cape Town on 7 November 1902. He became a solicitor in Johannesburg. I believe he was a Commander in the Royal Navy in the Second World War. I was told he visited England more than once. As well as visiting with his parents in 1909 he also returned to South Africa from a trip in 1958. On that occasion he left Liverpool on 27 October aboard The Morgenster, returning to S Africa a few weeks before the wedding of one of his daughters.

Derwent married twice. His first wife was Molly Harris and they had a son and a daughter. His second marriage was to Edna Marguerite Robertson-Grant who had been born on 2 March, 1910 in Edinburgh. She had four children from her previous marriage and she and Derwent had two more daughters.

Derwent died on 15 December 1970 and in Somerset West, Cape, South Africa, where he is buried. Edna died on 8 July 1988 in Cape Town.

One of Derwent's daughters lives in Jersey but the majority of his descendants still live in South Africa.
