(Gwen) Lily Owen (1879-1969)

Another daughter of Rev. Elias Owen and Margaret was (Gwen) Lily Owen, born in 1879 [Ruthin 1879, 2nd qt]. She may be in this 1895 family photo. In 1901 she was living with her mother and three of her sisters in Bangor and she was a hospital nurse. On Thursday, 2 June 1904 at Llanllechid Parish Church she married David Williams, about five years her senior, a merchant and the son of William, also a merchant, and Catherine Williams. David’s family had lived for some years at Nevad Newydd, Llanllechid. According to the 1911 census, David spoke only Welsh and Lily only English though their children were bilingual. David's father was a grocer and in 1901 David and his brother were working for their father as his assistants. "David Williams, retired grocer, and Eleanor Owen, widow" were granted probate on the death of Lily’s brother Thomas Edward Owen in 1932.

The family business later extended to include transport and finally became a bus and coach company. At the time of her marriage, Lily gave her address as ‘Mr. Pleasant Gerlan’. Lily, David and their family later lived at "Rhianfa", Llanllechid Road, Bethesda; in 1911 the family was still there (then designated 28 Llanllechid Road).

House & grave of Lily Owen Lily and David are buried in Llanllechid graveyard, a graveyard filled with slate headstones. Their graves lie in an enclosed area not far from the church door. The inscription records that David, of Rhianfa, Llanllechid, died on 1 July, 1935 aged 64 and Lily died on 29 November, 1969, aged 91; in fact David died at the Liverpool Eye and Ear Infirmary, and he left Lily just under £150. (Click here to see the local paper report of Lily's death and funeral.) Their gravestone reads "IN LOVING MEMORY/ OF/ DAVID WILLIAMS/ THE BELOVED HUSBAND OF G.L.WILLIAMS/ OF RHIANFA, LLANLLECHID/ DIED JULY 1ST 1935/ AGED 64 YEARS/ 'UNTIL DAWN'/ ALSO HIS BELOVED WIFE/ GWEN L. WILLIAMS/ DIED NOV 29TH 1969/ AGED 91 YEARS/ 'WE ALL DO FADE AS A LEAF'/ R.I.P.": "We all do fade as a leaf” (from Isaiah 24 vi), is quoted on the gravestone of Elias Owen, Lily’s father.

Lily and David had seven children.
