Donald Lee Jones was born on 14 November 1905 and was a student at State College at the time of his father’s death in 1928. In 1930 Donald (24) was a clerk with a telephone company and he was still working for a telephone company in 1940. In the early part of the 20th century, many new telephone companies were springing up as the Bell monopoly expired. In Lancaster the expansion of the system involved winning over the extreme Amish factions, the strictest of whom would not use a pony and trap, let alone a telephone. The phone companies ran a long advertising campaign to persuade the protesters and, as was almost inevitable, the phone network duly expanded.
Donald died on 4 April 2001 in Akron, Lancaster, Pa. He is buried with his parents in Slatesville Cemetery, Delta, Pa. With regard to the children of Arthur and Mollie, beyond the information in the censuses, there was a useful snippet of social reporting in the Delta Herald-Times, 21 Sept 1933: "Mrs. Arthur L. Jones, of Lancaster, spent the week-end with Miss Margaret Morris. Mr. and Mrs. Buckard and Donald Jones, of Lancaster, spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Williams."
Mrs. Buckard was Donald’s sister Elizabeth (Betty) Lee Jones. She was born on 25 April 1916 in Delta York, Pa. Delta Herald-Times. 22 June 1933, p 4, reported:
BUCHARD--JONES Announcement has been made of the marriage of C. A. Buchard and Miss Betty Lee Jones, both of Lancaster. The bride is a daughter of the late Arthur L. Jones and Mrs. Mollie Jones, of Lancaster, but formerly of Delta. Her many friends here wish them happines
I believe this may have been Charles A Buckard, the son of Charles and Millie Buckard of Westfield, New Jersey. In the 1940 census Charles and Betty and son Donald (5) were with the Buckard family in Westfield, NJ; they may also have had a daughter. In the 1960s they lived at Duncan Hill, Westfield, NJ, and may have spent some time at Point Pleasant Beach, NJ, about 50 miles south of Westfield. Betty died aged eighty-eight on 23 September 2004 in Willow St, Lancaster, Pa. (one source suggests she died in New Jersey).
There are living descendants from this line.
The third child of Arthur and Mollie Jones was Eleanor Isabel (aka ‘Isabel Eleanor) Jones. She was born on 13 June 1909 at her parents’ home, Main St, Delta, York, Pa and was a file clerk at the Machinery Company in 1930. She died, unmarried, in Delta, York, Pa, in 1969.
