James's education

James was fortunate to have received a very good education at Deythur Grammar School, where the schoolmaster was generally the chaplain of Holy Trinity Church, Penrhos (map). Deythur (now called Deuddwr), is about 2 miles from Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain) (map 1). The school was founded in 1690 by the Lord of the manor "to instruct the children of the lord and tenants of the said manor or lordship in reading, writing, and in Latin and Greek grammar, and all other learning usually taught in a grammar school". (Montgomeryshire Collections, xxviii, 236) It was extremely unusual for a rural community to boast such a facility.
